Located just three blocks from the main entrance of the University of Georgia, First Presbyterian Church of Athens is situated in the heart of downtown Athens, a vibrant college town in Northeast Georgia.
The Athens Welcome Center, located in the historic Church-Waddel-Brumby House, is just a few blocks from our church on East Dougherty Street. If you are new to our city, please be sure to visit this wonderful community resource.
Within walking distance of the church are many exciting parts of our town, including the famous 40 Watt Club, a music venue which has helped launch the careers of several native Athenian bands, including R.E.M., the Modern Skirts, Of Montreal, and Drive-By Truckers. Also to be found downtown is the historic Morton Theatre, one of the first vaudeville theatres built, owned, and operated by an African-American. The city’s Classic Center Theatre brings in amazing music and theatre performances and hosts Robert Osborne’s Classic Film Festival yearly.
Outside of downtown Athens are many outdoor opportunities, including the State Botanical Garden of Georgia, the Bear Hollow Wildlife Trail and Zoo, and the Oconee River Greenway. On Saturdays at Bishop Park during the Spring and Summer, the Athens Farmers Market is a common meeting area for local farmers, craftsman, chefs, musicians, and artisans dedicated to local and sustainable products.
